We’re planning some really exciting sessions this year, including:

Game in a Day: Kids can learn the basics of coding and game design, building their very own playable game (like a Platformer or Cosy Game) from scratch to take home and show off.

3D Printing & Modelling: A chance to get creative designing 3D models with Tinkercad or Blender, and they’ll get to see their creations brought to life on our 3D printers.

Pixel Art for Games: Perfect for young artists who want to learn how to design and animate retro-style characters and game assets.

We love teaching skills that give students the tools to keep creating long after the workshop ends. Whether they are complete beginners or already love tech, everyone is welcome!

We’ll be exploring how software and hardware work together through a range of fun, hands-on projects, including:

• Cookie jar protection – build a system that detects when the lid is opened and sounds a buzzer to catch snack thieves in the act
• Motion sensor challenges – create a motion detector and see if you can sneak past it without setting it off
• Button press games – put your reflexes (and your code) to the test to see who can press the button first

And that’s just the beginning. There will be plenty more ideas to experiment with, tweak, and improve as students learn how their code interacts with the physical world.

All of the students responded well to the 3D printing concepts and considered how to construct their designs to accommodate the way that 3D printers actually print objects in the real world.

It was a great opportunity to fully exercise all of our technology with a group of students, and thankfully our preparations allowed us to run a session free of technical difficulties.

With the completion of our first successful 3D printing workshop—and workshops in general—this is a format that we will be running going forward. We have plenty of ideas for other workshops that we would love to run:
