We printed out some existing cards and had a go at assembling them—looking at how they were constructed, what worked, what made them tricky to put together, and the strength of the models at the end. With this in mind, our students will be designing their very own kit cards next session—and once printed, they will be able to see if they work! We are very excited to see and have a go at their creations. Watch this space!

Have a go at playing against our new AI. With each game, it will get a little better until we hope it can beat any human player. You’ll learn how it learns and (hopefully) see it evolve in real time.

We had fun showing off our ‘Machine Learning Unplugged’ – a demo as to how AI learns where its brain is managed through different coloured beads! At the beginning of the day, the AI made random choices and the humans could beat it easily. But over a number of rounds through reinforcement learning – adding beads when it won and removing beads when it lost – it became a master of the game and won most rounds.

We also enjoyed showing off our home made Zoetrope which is a great example of how animations work, and our collection of 3d printed bits and bobs – some made by our students!

There was some good attendance and we want to thank the Keki’s Guinea Pig and Rabbit Rescue for running the event and hope that they had a good day fundraising.

All of the students responded well to the 3D printing concepts and considered how to construct their designs to accommodate the way that 3D printers actually print objects in the real world.

It was a great opportunity to fully exercise all of our technology with a group of students, and thankfully our preparations allowed us to run a session free of technical difficulties.

With the completion of our first successful 3D printing workshop—and workshops in general—this is a format that we will be running going forward. We have plenty of ideas for other workshops that we would love to run:

Please feel free to join our Christmas 3D Printing workshop. This will be a fun session after school on a Thursday where kids can get stuck into how 3D printing works and how to actually design 3D models using a very simple and intuitive system.

We will be guiding kids through the mindset of how 3D prints work and how to come up with designs for flawless prints. We will also have one or two 3D printers at the session to watch some of the designs coming to life!

All designs will be saved and printed through the week – collection will be available from the following week.
